What is a Donor Advised Fund?

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a simple, flexible way to support the Planetary Sunshade Foundation. If you already have a DAF—or are considering opening one—it can be an effective tool for strategic, tax-advantaged giving.

You can recommend a grant to us from any major DAF provider, including Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, or your local community foundation.

How to do I Recommend a DAF Grant?

To make a gift through your DAF, provide your fund administrator with:

Most DAF platforms will find us automatically when you search by name or EIN. Grants are typically sent by check, with an accompanying letter indicating your recommendation (unless you choose to remain anonymous).

Please note: We do not issue tax receipts for DAF grants. Your charitable deduction occurs when you contribute to your donor-advised fund.

Can I Donate Complex Assets (Including Private SpaceX Stock?)

If you'd like to support PSF by contributing private company stock or other non-public assets, it is often easiest to do so through a donor-advised fund.

DAF sponsors have dedicated “complex assets” teams who handle appraisals, legal review, and coordination with companies such as SpaceX. After the asset is accepted and liquidated, the DAF can make cash grants to PSF.

What if I Don’t Have a Donor-Advised Fund?

Starting a DAF is straightforward and can be done online in minutes. Many donors choose a DAF because it allows them to:

  • Make one tax-deductible contribution (cash, stock, or other assets)

  • Invest those funds for potential growth

  • Recommend grants to charities like PSF over time

  • Give anonymously when desired

  • Streamline record-keeping for tax purposes

Popular national providers include:

Local community foundations also offer donor-advised funds and may provide more personalized support.

Opening a DAF is optional—PSF welcomes gifts in any form—but it can be a helpful tool for donors who want both flexibility and simplicity.
